Yakov Shapiro

Yakov Shapiro was born in Moscow and brought up in a secular Jewish family. He emigrated to Canada as a refugee at the age of 19 for ideological reasons.

He is a psychiatrist and Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Alberta. He is presently a member of the Canadian Psychiatric Association (sections of Biological and Psychodynamic Psychiatry, and Group Psychotherapy), CPA Research Network, Canadian Medical Association, Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. His interests include integrated psychopharmacology & psychotherapy of mental disorders; evolutionary psychiatry; affective and social neuroscience; psychology of religion; atheism; and secular humanism.
